Japan, being Japan, has really weird commercials. I think one of the strangest (or perhaps the most awkward) for me was a jeans commercial that was nothing but crotch shots of people doing limbo. Um. But it's (meaning commercials, not crotch shots) also something you get used to after a while. American commercials are just going to seem so dull, wow.
But for now, please enjoy watching my absolute favorite Japanese commercial. Part of the reason I love it is because of the music; the other reason is that the guy has a very gangster cane.
Gangster Cane Video
These other commercials are something no American seems to know about. Brad Pitt did a commercial set for the huge Japanese cellphone company Softbank. I found it rather entertaining, since it's not what you typically imagine Brad Pitt doing...
Walking to the Restaurant
Eating perhaps questionable food
Please excuse my inability to post videos on blogs.
Oh, and for anyone worried that Japan was somehow devastated during Typhoon Melor- it rained. That was it. Very little damage to anything other than the potted plants my host family owns. So hooray!
Jaa ne!

Hi Teresa,
ReplyDeleteI have been reading your blog and continue to be amazed at all you are experiencing. You sound as if you have adjusted so well to life in Japan, something I don't think I would have the courage to do. Take care and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Janet and Neil
Heya Teresa! I'm loving reading your blog, it sounds like you're having a great time over there. I am completely torn on that commercial. I'm not sure what I like the most:
ReplyDelete(A) The music.
(B) The fact that he doesn't flinch at all when the wall falls.
(C) The outfit + cane combo.
If there is a way to make eating an onigiri seem more gangster, I'd love to see it.
have you seen the CC lemon commercial where the old man uses the bottle as a shell bra?
ReplyDeleteoddddd!
wow brad pitt wouldnt expect that!
ReplyDeleteps i looked at your facebook pictures everything is so gorgeous! especially you. hahahha but really its like every picture is a Japanese postcard or something it looks amazing thanks for posting the pictures! :) <3
Kinda weird seeing Brad Pitt in commercials, no? Softbank, I looked it up, is a mobile phone service in Japan. I know you had to purchase a phone when you got there. Do you have Brad Pitt's phone?
ReplyDeleteOf the three, I liked the first one best. How the guy didn't even blink when the thing fell... what absolute control! I'm curious though... what was he eating? Was it rice in seaweed wrap with tuna in the middle? Or might it have been ice with some fishy thing? What was it?
I loved the pictures, Reese. Thank you for sharing them. I'm trying to remember... was that your first spelunking expidenture? I think I remember carrying you into a big cave once. Mammoth Cave maybe? It was a very long time ago.
The peace signs all time... it's really odd. I really don't get it. Anyway, the pictures are terrific. The ones you labeled "I like the sun here" and "MY FAVORITE PICTURE" are my favorites... after all the ones that you are in. I love your smile, Ninja Warrior Princess!
I miss you, baby. I'm going to try to convince Tim to set up a Skype date for the three of us soon. Sundays are best, yes?
I love you.
Hi Teresa, (tho' I like RESA), it's Ms. Flowers. You are reminding me of my short time in Japan long ago and I am jealous of your great experience (your proud mom shared the address). I hear the pics are fabulous and I guess we have to be friends on Facebook. Your name has several people connected to it, but I am the only Marylu Flowers-Schoen if you want to "befriend" in reverse. Of course, some of the chats from my "artsy" friends is un-understandable so just ignore.
ReplyDeleteKeep in the great depths of the experience,
